Literacy
What is Literacy?
The National Literacy Trust defines literacy as “the ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that lets us communicate effectively and make sense of the world.”
At Oasis Academy MediaCityUK, we aim to put literacy at the heart of all our subjects. We aim to become strong readers of English, History, Music and Science. We strive to be confident speakers of Spanish, Geography and Religious Studies. We endeavour to communicate through spoken language, artistic creation, intricate construction and physical education.
Throughout our curriculum journey, students will focus on the literacy skills of all subjects which are underpinned by the teaching of strong standards in writing, reading, grammar accuracy and oracy.
The Importance of Literacy
Literacy skills are vital in order for students to access their education, pathways to careers and to simply communicate effectively throughout their lives. At Oasis Academy MediaCityUK, we think of literacy as a ‘tree of communication’. If the foundations of reading, writing, oracy and listening are strong, then a child is given the ability to access and understand so many different areas of life. By building these core skills, we not only improve their ability to succeed in every subject, but also provide them with a toolkit to help them understand their emotions, aspirations and the world around them.
As part of our dedication to building literacy skills, we introduced a R.E.A.D (reading enhancement and development) curriculum to Key Stage 3. Students attend one lesson a week which focuses on the improvement of their reading ability. In addition to this, every subject area delivers one R.E.A.D based lesson per half-term, so that students know how to read texts across all subjects and themes.
